Good gut bacteria can help with controlling weight and inflammation

Obstructive Sleep Apnea for most sufferers is a result of obesity and inflammation. A recent study discussing new research from scientists at Washington University in St. Louis reports what type of bacteria and how much bacteria the body impacts obesity and internal inflammation.

Bacteria in the gut. Can it make us thin or fat?

  • The human body has ten-fold more bacteria in the body than it has cells.
  • Recent studies show the mix of bacteria makes a difference in our health.
  • Good bacteria and more diverse bacteria tend to live in healthy lean bodies.
  • Bad bacteria and as much as 25% less over-all-bacteria is found in obese bodies.
  • The wrong type of bacteria drives inflammation; which is a key reason in Sleep Apnea.
  • A new study shows that swapping the good bacteria into an obese body cause weight loss along with eating foods that promote good bacteria growth; mostly low fact high fiber foods.

Wouldn’t it be nice if this is the beginning of an overall understanding on what is causing our drastic rise of Obstructive Sleep Apnea? Take a look at what CBS has to say about it.

45 Bing cherries a day may keep the doctor away

Recently researchers at UC Davis Medical Center published a study on the benefits of eating Bing cherries. Conclusion? Eating 45 Bings a day can lower inflammation markers. Inflammation is a key contributor to obstructive sleep apnea. Lowering swelling and inflammation in the airway passage can open the airway.

Eating cherries improved the following biomarker levels in circulating blood:

27.9% anti-inflammatory protein IL-1Ra
29%  EN-RAGE, a protein associated with blood vessel abnormalities in diabetes
20.3% ferritin, a protein that controls blood iron levels
20.1%  C-reactive protein
19.9%   plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1), a blood clot preventer
14.4%  tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFa)
13.2% epidermal growth factor (EGF)
13.7% endothelin-1 (ET-1), a potent vasoconstrictor

CPAP for all. You can help!

At the American Sleep Apnea Association, we are struck with how many apnea suffers go without treatment, which is a deadly proposition. Often, it is because they can not afford a CPAP. For a while now, we have acted as the middle-person by procuring gently used CPAP machines to people; people who have a serious desire to overcome apnea. The recipients are so appreciative.

Right now, you can help match a machine to an appreciative apnea sufferer by contributing to our crowdsource giving campaign. Check it out at

Bless the man who invented sleep

“All I know is that while I’m asleep, I’m never afraid, and I have no hopes, no struggles, no glories — and bless the man who invented sleep, a cloak over all human thought, food that drives away hunger, water that banishes thirst, fire that heats up cold, chill that moderates passion, and, finally, universal currency with which all things can be bought, weight and balance that brings the shepherd and the king, the fool and the wise, to the same level. There’s only one bad thing about sleep, as far as I’ve ever heard, and that is that it resembles death, since there’s very little difference between a sleeping man and a corpse”
Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, Don Quijote de La Mancha
